Culture note
Un grand magasin literally means a big shop, but it usually refers to a department store. In Paris, several department stores can be found along les Grands Boulevards near the Opéra. Another famous landmark in that neighbourhood is le Café de la Paix, opened in the mid-19th century and associated with writers, composers and intellectuals during La Belle Époque.
Lutèce
Lutèce, or Lutetia in Latin, is the name of the Gallo-Roman city that eventually became Paris. Today the name can still be found in cafés, restaurants, hotels and other businesses around France.
